A mission trip begins long before you pack a suitcase.

It begins when God starts preparing your heart.

There is plenty to think about before you leave. Travel plans. Packing lists. Passports. Fundraising. Team meetings. Ministry schedules. All of those things matter.

But spiritual preparation matters more.

A mission trip places you in unfamiliar environments, around unfamiliar people, often in situations where you have to rely on God in ways ordinary life does not require. That can be exciting. It can also be uncomfortable, exhausting, and challenging.

That is why the most important thing you can bring with you is not something that fits in your luggage.

It is a heart prepared to follow Jesus.

Remember Why You Are Going

Mission trips can easily become about the trip itself.

The destination is exciting. The friendships can become some of your closest. The pictures may be incredible. The stories you bring home may stay with you for the rest of your life.

But none of those things are the mission.

Jesus is.

Before you leave, remind yourself why you are going. You are not going because you have everything figured out. You do not. You are not going because you are more spiritual than the people you will meet.

You are going because Jesus calls His followers to serve, make disciples, share the Gospel, and point people to Him.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…”

The mission begins with obedience.

Sometimes that obedience takes you across an ocean. Sometimes it takes you across the street.

The distance changes.

The purpose does not.

Point people to Jesus.

Pray Before You Go

Prayer should not be the thing you squeeze in after everything else is ready.

Prayer is part of getting ready.

Pray for the people you will meet before you ever know their names. Pray for your team and your leaders. Pray for unity. Pray for courage. Pray for opportunities to serve and share the Gospel.

But do not only pray about what God might do through you.

Ask Him what He wants to do in you.

A mission trip has a way of exposing things ordinary life can hide. Fear. Selfishness. Impatience. Pride. Dependence on comfort. The need to control everything.

You may discover that God wants to change your heart as much as He wants to use your hands.

Let Him.

You are not going simply to bring something to someone else. You are going as a follower of Jesus who still needs Him every step of the way.

Expect the Unexpected

Something will probably go wrong.

A flight may be delayed. Plans may change. Weather may interfere. Someone on your team may frustrate you. You may become exhausted. The ministry opportunity you imagined may look nothing like the one actually placed in front of you.

That does not mean the mission is failing.

Sometimes the interruption is the ministry.

Jesus regularly stopped for people others might have considered interruptions. A woman reached for His robe. Blind Bartimaeus shouted from the roadside. Zacchaeus climbed a tree just to see Him. Children were brought to Jesus when His disciples thought He was too busy for them.

Again and again, Jesus noticed the person in front of Him.

You should too.

Prepare now to hold your plans loosely. Be flexible. Pay attention. Ask God to help you recognize the opportunities you did not schedule.

The person who needs you most that day may never appear on the itinerary.

Go Ready to Serve, Not to Be Seen

There is nothing wrong with taking pictures. You will probably want to remember the people, places, and moments God gives you.

Just be careful that documenting the mission does not become more important than doing the mission.

Some of the most meaningful things you do may never make it onto social media.

You may wash dishes. Carry supplies. Clean something unpleasant. Sit quietly beside someone who is hurting. Play with children. Pray with a stranger. Listen to someone tell a story that takes longer than you expected.

You may do something important that nobody back home ever hears about.

It still matters.

Jesus taught His disciples that greatness in His Kingdom looks like service.

So go willing to do the unnoticed work.

Serve when nobody is watching. Help when nobody is taking pictures. Love people who can offer you nothing in return.

That is not the boring part of the mission.

That is the mission.

Go Ready

You do not have to be fearless.

You do not have to know everything.

You do not have to be the most outgoing person on the team.

You simply need to be willing.

Prepare your heart. Pray. Stay humble. Stay flexible. Pay attention to the people God puts in front of you. Be ready to serve, speak when He opens the door, and trust Him when you do not know what comes next.

You are not going because you know exactly what will happen.

You are going because you know Who is going with you.
